Presidential Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP)
By Dr. Muhammad, Writing from Sokoto
Your Excellency,
I write to you not through the customary channels of official protocol, but through the public domain of the press. I choose this medium so that this message may reach not only you, but also the millions of everyday citizens who share in the hope that your candidacy represents.
I make no claim to be an outsider to your cause. I was present at our party’s National Convention in Bauchi State, standing among thousands of delegates and dedicated supporters who endorsed your emergence as the presidential flagbearer of the Social Democratic Party for the 2027 general elections. It was a proud moment for all of us who believe in the ideals of the SDP, and I commend our National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, along with the entire party leadership, for the confidence reposed in you to lead this historic mission.
Your Excellency, permit me to speak candidly, as someone who wants nothing short of success for your candidacy and a better future for our nation.
You are not new to this journey. Your record demonstrates that you possess the courage, vision, and conviction required to seek Nigeria’s highest office. However, as both you and I know, the path to the presidency in our country is neither short nor easy. It demands far more than good intentions; it requires clear strategy, sustained visibility, and a message that resonates across every corner of this vast and diverse nation.
It is in this spirit of constructive engagement that I raise a concern weighing heavily on many of us who are working quietly for your victory, particularly here in the North-West.
Sir, we have a rare political window before us, perhaps greater than at any point in our recent history. Countless Nigerians are weary of the current administration and are actively searching for a credible alternative. They have grown tired of the familiar political figures who continue to dominate our ballot papers—figures whom many rightly view as part of the problem rather than the solution.
This environment offers fertile ground for a candidate like you, who remains untainted by past leadership failures. Yet, fertile ground, if left untended, yields no harvest.
To be direct with you: a significant portion of voters across the North-West still know very little about you or your vision for Nigeria. Thus far, our outreach has relied far too heavily on social media—on online posts and appeals for shares. This strategy has obvious limitations. A vast number of voters in our region do not use social media at all. Furthermore, among those who do, many treat online content as temporary entertainment rather than serious political communication.
Your Excellency, you are surrounded by men and women of immense courage and dedication who are ready to work tirelessly to write this new chapter. What they urgently need from you is clearer communication, robust organizational support, and a deliberate ground campaign. Your vision must move beyond phone screens and directly into the homes, markets, mosques, churches, and community spaces where ordinary Nigerians gather. In regions like ours, elections are won through grassroots mobilization, not hashtags.
We do not doubt your capacity to govern justly and lead Nigeria toward the progress it desperately needs. We simply ask that the scale and machinery of this campaign match the magnitude of the moment.
It would be the greatest joy of my political life to see you emerge, by God’s grace, as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But that joy will remain a distant hope unless the gap between your vision and the millions of voters who need to hear it is urgently closed.
I remain, as ever, a steadfast supporter of your candidacy and of the Social Democratic Party.
Long live the SDP.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
